Tom Melbourne remains an outright $4.20 favourite in 2016 JRA Cup betting markets with Ladbrokes.com.au despite drifting, ahead of Real Love ($4.40), Observational ($5) and Godolphin runner Arab Dawn ($8.50).

Will Tom Melbourne justify favouritism and win the 2016 JRA Cup, or will one of his talented rivals post an upset?

Tom Melbourne ($4.20)

Tom Melbourne was a pre-post favourite for the Caulfield Cup earlier this season and if he is to be winning that, he will have to win the 2016 JRA Cup on Friday night. Winner of the Listed Albury Gold Cup (2000m) in March but failing to make much of an impact in the Listed Mornington Cup (2400m), the Dylan Thomas gelding resumed this time for a close second in the Listed Heatherlie Stakes (1700m) before placing sixth in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) last time out. Dwayne Dunn will take the ride on Tom Melbourne from the ideal barrier 7, and the horse has been charged with carrying only 55kgs.

Real Love ($4.40)

Real Love has been charged with carrying a race-high 58kgs in the 2016 JRA Cup, but the mare is arguably the class horse of the race and should be right in the finish on Friday night. Transferred to the care of Darren Weir at the beginning of the year, Real Love won the Listed Roy Higgins Quality (2600m) on March 5th before running third in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m). Having won each of the Group 3 JRA Cup (2000m) and Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2200m) through winter most notably, the daughter of Desert King stormed home to finishing second in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) first-up this time, but only managed seventh in the Naturalism Stakes a fortnight ago.

Tarquin ($13)

Godolphin runner Tarquin is capable of brilliance on his day and is treated particularly well under the conditions of the JRA Cup, particularly at only 54kgs. Tarquin won the Mornington Guineas (1500m) in record time during autumn, before beating a smart field to the line in the Next Payments BM90 (2000m) most notably. Drawn ideally, Tarquin should be charging to the line in the late stages of the JRA Cup and represents terrific value at his current quote.
